Great gifts for Mother's Day!

Make something special for Mum and put a smile on her face!

Mother's Day vase

What you'll need

  • Platic cup or bowl
  • Warm water
  • White glue
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Tissue paper in different colours
  • Flat spatula
  • Old vase or clean 750ml glass jar (a pasta sauce jar works well)
  • Old magazines (to cut out words or letters)

How to do it...

  1. Tear coloured tissue paper into pieces the size of your palm or smaller.
  2. Fill a plastic cup or bowl about one-third full with warm water and add three strong squirts of white glue. Stir with the paintbrush until the mixture is the consistency of milk.
  3. Hold a piece of tissue paper flat against the jar and coat the entire piece with the water-glue mixture. (Don't worry if the paper gets creased or folded, it adds texture.)
  4. Repeat, overlapping the tissue paper edges until the jar is covered.
  5. Let it dry overnight before gluing on words or letters.
  6. Wrap it up and surprise your mum on Mother's Day. The matching tool holder is a great idea for Dad, too!

Chocolate twigs

What you'll need

  • 1 bag of bread sticks
  • 350g-bag of chocolate and white chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Baking tray
  • Spoon
  • Flat spatula
  • Table knife

How to do it...

  1. Ask a parent for permission to use the kitchen.
  2. Put chocolate chips and butter in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave on high for 90 seconds, then stir. If the chips are not melted, heat for 30 more seconds and stir again. Dip the spatula into the melted chocolate.
  3. Roll the bread sticks in the chocolate on the spatula so it is half-covered. (Melted white chocolate can be a little lumpy, so you may need to smooth it over the pretzel with the knife.)
  4. Lay each chocolate-dipped pretzel on the baking tray. Let the dipped pretzels sit for 30 minutes before serving. Don’t put them in the fridge.
  5. Give your mum a yummy chocolate treat to enjoy on her special day!
