Make your own pet treats


To celebrate the Pet Special in this month's NG Kids magazine, we've got a recipe each for the UK's top pets – one for cats and one for dogs! Get a parent or guardian to help you with making these pet treats

Cat biscuits

You will need:

  • 200g cooked chicken, chopped
  • 120ml of chicken soup
  • 200g whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon soft margarine

What to do:

  1. Preheat the over to 180C.
  2. Blend all the ingredients together into a firm, sticky dough.
  3. Cut into 1.5cm-sized pieces and place on an ungreased baking tray.
  4. Bake for 20-30 minutes.

Dog biscuits

You will need:

  • 200g of raw liver
  • 325g plain white flour
  • 100g of oats
  • one-and-half beef or chicken stock cubes
  • 1 cup water
  • One egg, beaten
What to do:
  1. Preheat oven to 180C.
  2. Grease a large baking tray.
  3. Chop the liver finely, or put briefly in a blender. Get an adult to help with this bit.
  4. Mix flour and oats, crumble in the stock cubes, add egg and
  5. the chopped liver.
  6. Add enough water to make a firm but slightly sticky dough.
  7. Spread evenly on the baking tray, about 1.5cm thick.
  8. Use a small cookie cutter to cut each biscuit.
  9. Bake for 40-50 minutes.

Remember! Some foods us humans like are harmful to cats and dogs. For example, chocolate, fruit, raisins, onions and garlic should all be avoided by your pets. Ask your vet for more information.
