Make spooky spider cakes!
To celebrate the release of Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, in cinemas from 23 October, here’s a fun recipe to make scrummy chocolate spider cakes inspired by Madam Octa the creepy crawly star of the movie. They’re the perfect treat for Halloween!
What you’ll need to make 6 cakes…
- Chocolate muffins
- 125g chocolate
- Chocolate fingers
- 40g unsalted butter, cut in pieces
- 2 tbs (30ml) water
- 75g icing sugar, sifted
- Tubes of red and white writing icing
How to do it…
- For the body, carefully cut the tops off the muffins and place them top down on a flat surface.
- Melt a third of the chocolate in a bowl set over simmering water.
- Once the melted chocolate has cooled slightly, you’re ready to make your spider’s legs! Cut the chocolate fingers in half at an angle. Dip both bits in the melted chocolate and press together to form legs.
- Place the legs a paper-lined tray and then into the fridge until firm (about 1 hour).
- Add the remaining chocolate to your bowl and heat gently. Stir in the icing sugar and butter. Continue stirring until the butter has melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from the heat and gradually stir in the water.
- Spread the icing over the tops of the cakes, and poke four holes into both sides of each spider. Your legs will go in these holes when they are set!
- Draw on the spider faces with the red and white writing icing and leave to set. Once the legs are firm enough, place them into the holes. Your spiders are ready to be scoffed!
