Bird watch

The starling is the most common bird spotted in schools, according to the RSPCB's 2008 Big Schools'Birdwatch results. More than 48,000 children from 1,500 took part in the this year's Big Schools' Birdwatch, which took place from 21 January to 1 February, with a total of 64,427 birds counted. Other bird species in the top 10 spotted include the black-headed gull, blackbird (above), chaffinch (below) and house sparrow.
