NG Kids chats to Carlos Saldanha – director of the ace new animation, Ice Age 3: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs

NG Kids: Hi Carlos! What’s your new movie about?
Carlos Saldanha: The third Ice Age movie carries on a little after the second film finishes. The previous movie was about Manny finding love, but this movie is about Manny starting a family – with a whole lot more. That’s why we decided to create an exciting new world of dinosaurs.

NGK: What was your toughest challenge in creating this movie?
CS: The toughest challenge was to manage all of the characters. We started the first movie with three characters and a baby. In the second movie, we added Ellie and a possum. Now, we’ve got even more!

NGK: Tell us about the new characters in Ice Age 3
CS: This time we have a weasel called Buck, who is someone we find in the lost world of dinosaurs. There’s also a girl called Scratte who is a love interest for Scrat.

NGK: Why did you decide to do the film in 3D?
CS: When I first heard we were going 3D, I panicked. We didn’t have loads of time and we had to create a third movie – but on top of that, it was our first 3D movie. Fortunately, we had an amazing crew of 3D artists who came in and took over. It was a blast!

NGK: Are you a fan of 3D films?

CS: Personally, I’m not used to 3D movies. I remember watching 3D movies with those red and blue glasses, but you always ended up with a huge headache at the end of the show. Now, it’s so much better. You’re going to love it!

NGK: Are there going to be loads of things popping out of the screen in 3D?
CS: There are no gimmicks here. We’re not trying to go for the classic ‘poke in the eye’ moment with things popping out of the screen. But we have a great pterodactyl flying sequence with things shooting through the air, which works wonderfully in 3D. I can’t wait for everyone to see it!

NGK: So why should we watch the new film?

CS: Because we’re taking everything to the next level in Ice Age 3. All of the characters are back in full force with loads of fun, excitement or energy. It’s really funny, too. There’s something for everyone – and everyone is going to laugh their hearts out!
