Adam Hicks from Disney's Lemonade Mouth interview!
We caught up with the musical star of Zeke and Luther Adam Hicks to chat about his rocking, new film Lemonade Mouth premiering on the Disney Channel this September...
NG Kids Hi Adam! Can you tell us a little bit about Lemonade Mouth?
Adam Hicks Yes, Lemonade Mouth is about five kids who meet in detention. They are five underdogs who meet then start a rock band and become super, mega rock stars.
NGK Where does the name Lemonade Mouth come from?
AH There is a scene in the movie that establishes why we come up with Lemonade Mouth. We’re being bullied by an arch nemesis band and the leader of the band kind of confronts us and a couple things happen and this results in the name of the band.
NGK Can you tell us a bit about your character Wen?
AH Wen, he plays the keyboard and he’s a rapper in Lemonade Mouth. He’s very musically inclined, he’s very chilled and he has a rocker side to him. He is very close to his dad and he just loves music, he loves playing piano and he loves anything musical.
NGK Wen is a bit like you then! You've written songs for Lemonade Mouth, how did that come about?
AH Well actually Disney Music contacted me before I had even booked the character Wen and they were like “I would really love for you to do music for Lemonade Mouth”. I was still going up for the character at the time so I was tripping out and I was like “ahh that’s so awesome and then I flipped when I got the part of Wen on top of it and so it was like the ultimate package. I got to write the first two songs and then I went out to New Mexico and then the last two weeks, they wanted to do a bonus song and a bonus scene, so I got to write for Living on a Highwire, so that was three.
NGK Did you write Determinate?
AH Yeah, I got to write for Determinate, Breakthrough and Living on the Highwire.
NGK Have you got any tips for people wanting to write music but are not sure where to begin?
AH Oh man, I get terrible writers block! I mean, how I do it is I kind of feel where I want to go with the song or where I want to go with what I’m talking about. If you can write down the basics just like an outline for an essay, then your mind can be more directed into certain topics.
NGK What instruments can you play, and who's your favourite singer?
AH I play piano, drums, a little bit of guitar, I’m getting better. My favourite singer? I like all kinds of music like Celine Dion, I like Bruno Mars, more recently. I like all kinds of people.
NGK Wow, You’ve got quite a mature taste in music...
AH It’s my Dad I promise. Yeah it’s my dad’s influence. We used to drive from Las Vegas to California for auditions like my whole life and he would put on his iPod and just bump music all the way.
NGK What does Hutch who plays Zeke alongside you in Zeke & Luther think of your songs?
AH Oh, Hutch is like one of my biggest supporters which is so awesome because, I mean Hutch has really seen me grow as an artist, you know what I mean, as far as the professional world. Like, Hutch and I have been through so much together, 73 episodes, three seasons, daily work and so he’s really seen me grow as an artist and he fully supports me like, he always texts me every time any music video or any song drops and he’s always like ‘ohhh’.
NGK Can he sing too?
AH Yeah, Hutch can sing. Yeah, I’ve heard him sing. I don’t know if he was dropping an album, that’s probably up to Hutch.
NGK Have you got any talents other than song writing and skateboarding?
AH Wow, song writing and skateboarding. Talents...I can stand on my head for like five minutes. Yeah, I can beat box pretty good. Wow, I can dance really well, which is weird. I saw this dance crew in Las Vegas and it was like a popping crew, so I can do like the popping, jabbawockee kinda thing. I actually did a song for the JabbaWockeeZ so I was super excited because I got to like kind of learn their routine.
NGK What's the best thing about being an actor?
AH The best thing about being an actor, umm...probably, like I said, all the people you get to meet because you get to meet so many amazing people and there’s just so many experiences that you get by just booking projects and working with the Disney company. So that’s why I’m so blessed that I work with the Disney company because they’ve just taken me all over the world and, they’ve introduced me to so many people so, that’s cool.
