Artemis Fowl author, Eoin Colfer chats to NG Kids

NG Kids catches up with Artemis Fowl author, Eoin Colfer...

NG Kids Hi Eoin! How do you feel about the 10th anniversary of Artemis Fowl?
Eoin Colfer It feels unreal to me that 10 years have gone by so quickly. It is only when I think  back that I realise just how much has happened in the last decade. I feel incredibly lucky and proud that people are still choosing Artemis from a whole sea of books after so long. I hope his appeal lasts for another 10 years!

NGK You’ve said the eighth book in the series will be the last – are you tired of Artemis?!
Eoin I don’t think I could ever grow tired of Artemis, but I do want to finish the series while he is still popular. It will feel good to go out on top and there are many other stories that I want to pursue.

NGK How has Artemis changed over the series?
Eoin Artemis has become much more responsible over the series. Initially he was pretty much a two dimensional villain but now he has a circle of friends and the responsibilities that go along with that. He knows that for every immoral decision he takes, someone has to pay the price.

NGK What can you tell us about the last book?
Eoin I haven’t finished the plotting yet, but I am determined that it will be a complete adventure and not simply a wrapping up of any strands that need finishing off. I hope people will like the ending but I have no idea what that will be. I hope something occurs to me soon!

NGK What’s happening with the Artemis Fowl movie?
Eoin I’m working on the script and I think it’s a pretty good adaptation. Fingers crossed the studios agree! I would be delighted to see one of my books on the big screen, so long as it is a good version.

NGK What have you got planned for the future after the eighth book?
Eoin I have started work on a new series, called WARP, for slightly older readers and have also got my first adult crime novel, Plugged, out next month. So a busy year for me!

Eoin's writing tips

  1. The first one is obvious – read as much as possible.
  2. Try to keep a casual diary of interesting stuff that happens around you every day. Funny friends for example are gold dust.
  3. Whenever you write a story try to include one original thing. This sounds easy but it is actually quite difficult.
