Disney star Gregg Sulkin chats about Avalon High and Wizards Of Waverly Place
NG Kids catches up with Gregg Sulkin, star of Disney Channel’s Wizards Of Waverly Place and cool new movie, Avalon High!
NG Kids Hi Gregg! Tell us a bit about Avalon High please!
Gregg The movie follows a girls called Allie Penington (played by Britney Robertson), who goes to a new school called Avalaon High, and is shocked to discover her classmates are reincarnations of King Arthur and his court. Normal kind of stuff that happens when you start at a new school!
NGK Cool! And what’s your character like?
Gregg I play a guy called Will Wagner, who is the American quarterback, he’s the guy who everyone looks up to. Playing him was awesome!
NGK What was filming in New Zealand like?
Gregg It was a great experience! We filmed there for two and a half months. It was really beautiful and the people were super-friendly.
NGK So what was it like playing American football in the movie?
Gregg Being English, it was a challenge learning how to play a new sport. I trained for a month with a coach before we shot the film, and it was amazing. When we were filming, the first day on set was the first time I’d ever been on an American football field!
NGK That must have been quite hard!
Gregg It was definitely a challenge, but I learnt more and more with each take! It was really fun, in fact the football scenes were my favorite scenes to film!
Gregg Training to sword fight for the film – it was intense! We trained in tracksuit bottoms and t-shirts, but then we got on set and had to wear armour, which was completely different! It was a big shock! The armour looked great, and it wasn’t too heavy, but it was really stiff to move in, especially on the beach with horses!
NGK What kind of knight would you be in real life?
Gregg I’d make the best knight ever. I’m such a great sword fighter, I think I’m going to start calling myself the best knight in England!
NGK You play an American in the film, how was that?
Gregg They told me two days before I started shooting that I would be playing someone with an American accent. So that was a huge shock! It wasn’t the best surprise at the time, but now I’ve done it, I’ really happy.
NGK What kind of fun stuff did you get up to on set?
Gregg My dad and uncle are the biggest jokers and there was a magic shop next to our hotel, so we played a lot of pranks. We bought loads of bangers and put them under everything in the make-up room, so there were lots of explosions in there!
